Report on Accesses to Dooyeweerd Pages 19-26 September 2015

I undertook an analysis of the accesses during one week of use of The Dooyeweerd Pages. I wanted not just to find hit-counts, but to investigate the way people used the site: their behaviour and the level of interest and knowledge of Dooyeweerd. I used the Apache access records for the analysis.

Boring Statistics:

Total number of hits: 9323
Total number of non-bot hits: 826
Number of queries: 63 , of which:
- Led to further accesses: 6 (+ 3 repeated)
- Did not lead to further accesses: 54

The Interesting Analysis

I then looked for multiple hits from (non-bot) users, trying to find those that had evidence of human volition. To do this, I sorted in client URL order and found groups with same URL. Some of these were downloaders, so I removed them. I analysed the remaining access-sequences to determine level of interest in the content. This was indicated by time taken on pages, and whether the pages selected seemed to show some coherent interest (for example, help, summary and contact together). I give numbers, then describe the sequences that showed interest. Remember, this is for one week. See below for how I would analyse these.

THen 40 minutes pause. Then 10 more; the referrers of these seem to be pages found from the 20 accesses.	On aspects page for 2 mins. Next 56 accesses in 14 seconds! Then on aspects page for 7 secs. Next 20 accesses in 9 secs. Last 10 in 4 secs.	What is going on? The User-agent is IE. Has IE a macro to download pages in quick succession, then link from a selection of those pages? Why does 57 narrow down to 20 instead of mushrooming up?

What Indicates that People are Interested

There are perhaps several ways in which people access these pages:

People might look up something they know is there; usually this is indicated by asking for a named page.
Or they might have the Dooyeweerd Pages in their list of bookmarks and branch out from there (indicated perhaps by the source being Google, Yahoo or something without any named page and without any query.)
Or they might have some vague interest in Dooyeweerd and then look around; this might be indicated by a query with 'Dooyeweerd' in the query words).
Or they might stumble across a page which attracts there interest (indicated by entering via a query), then they might move around a number of pages (indicated by the subsequent sequence), Either they become hooked (indicated by spending a long time), or they might skip through a few things quickly and decide it's not of interest after all (indicated by few seconds between pages).
Some people might come back another day or some hours later (indicated by comparing the dates and times of accesses), which indicates interest.

Interest can be indicated by:

Spending some time on this page before going to next
Note, however, that we cannot tell how long they spent on the final page, reading it. It might have been an hour, or zero time. We can only look at pages en route.
Coming back the next day or some hours later
Asking for a named page, especially if not the main page.
A bunch of pages that 'make sense' as a coherent bunch; those who just click around without much interest, might look through random pages.
