ASPECTS OF KBS (ELSIE) USE

The knowledge based system, ELSIE, designed to aid quantity surveyors in advising clients on planning office developments, was adopted by many surveyors and put into use. That use was studied by the EPSRC-funded KBS In Use project.

The Dooyeweerdian aspects of its use were found to be as follows:

• integration into the workplace: aesthetic

• new roles stimulated by the system: pistic
• innovative and extended use of the system : cultural
• joint as well as single use of the system : social
• use as an explanatory device : lingual
• the use of KBS in recession : economic

• ease of learning: analytical
