On Creation, Things and Possibilities

I do not believe that God created every thing - each pebble in the scree on a mountainside, each grass plant in our fields, each bacterium in our gut, each sparrow, each pencil, each house, each symphony, each political party. Rather, I believe, God created the possibility of things to exist in various meaningful kinds, and for all things to work together towards Good.

So the pebble, for example, came into being by the Creation operating according to the laws of the physical aspect, which God wove into the very fabric of Creation. The grass plant came into being by the operation of laws of Creation's biotic and physical aspects, each cat by the operation of laws of biotic, psychical and physical aspects, each pencil by the operation of the physical aspect and the aspect of formative power, and each symphony by the operation of the aesthetic and other aspects. All such aspects God wove into the very fabric of Creation as ways of being and occurring, that are meaningful and Good. And all meaningfulness and Good are rooted ultimately in God.

However, that does not mean that all things are just mechanical products of the operation of Creation, as materialists would assume. Rather, every thing has God's 'fingerprints' on it. Because every thing comes into being because of the very threads of meaningfulness and good and possibility that God wove into the fabric of Creation. In a way, therefore, God is responsible for each thing that exists or has existed, because God made each possible.

To me, this is a corollary of God's love. God created because God wanted something other-than-God to love. God gave Creation dignity of being able to exist and operate other-than-God. And so God gifted laws to Creation to enable it to do so, so that when it functions in line with these laws, things come into being and things are Good.

However, though each thing is other-than-God, nothing is ever totally apart from God. Rather, God upholds all - the laws God gifted to Creation are faithful and trustworthy and all work together in harmony.
